Who we are

About Mark & Medium

Mark & Medium is an independent creative practice offering strategy, creative direction, and hands-on creative production. We help organizations tell their stories, build brands, shape ideas, and create communication that moves people to care, understand, or act.

Our work can take many forms, from brand and messaging to campaigns, content, social, design, and editorial. Some projects begin with a question. Others with a blank page, a shifting brief, or an idea that needs shape before it can move. We can lead the thinking, direct the creative, or carry an idea from first conversation to finished work. What holds it all together is a belief that communication should do more than exist. It should serve the organization, meet the audience where they are, and give people a reason to care.

Our philosophy

We start with people

We believe the best communication begins with an understanding of the people it is meant for. What they care about, what catches their attention, what shapes their perspective, and what gives something meaning in their lives all matter when deciding what to say and how to say it.

That means paying attention to the details that are easy to overlook: the things people respond to, question, remember, or leave unsaid. These observations can change the way we see a challenge and lead us toward work that feels more relevant, considered, and true to the people it is trying to reach.

To us, empathy isn’t about softening communication. It’s about making it more perceptive. The better we understand the people on the other side, the better equipped we are to create work that earns their attention and gives them a reason to care.

Empathy

Go beyond targeting to connect on a meaningful level.

People are more than audiences, segments, or data points. By genuinely understanding their values and the experiences shaping their perspectives, we create work that resonates.

Direction

Give good ideas somewhere to thrive.

Creative ideas flourish when they have direction. Purposeful direction enables us to make the decisions that transform your objectives into focused, cohesive work with a clear intention.

Curiosity

Question what’s expected. Explore what’s possible.

The first answer is rarely the most interesting one. We question the brief, look for what’s missing, and follow unexpected connections until we find an idea worth pursuing.

Impact

Make the work matter beyond the moment.

Being seen is only the beginning. Good creative work should leave something behind: a stronger perception, a clearer idea, a changed behavior, a deeper connection, or momentum toward what comes next.

Our approach

Creativity strengthens strategy

Strategy gives an idea direction, but creative thinking can challenge the strategy, open up new possibilities, and change what we thought the answer might be. We don’t see strategy and creativity as separate parts of the work. The strongest work gives both room to influence the other.

That might mean defining a brand’s position, shaping its message, developing a campaign, directing the creative, or bringing an idea to life across content, social, digital, and other channels. We can lead from the strategic side, the creative side, or carry the work across both, depending on what the challenge calls for.

Meet Laura

Laura has always been interested in what sits underneath the obvious answer. A story behind the story. A connection between things that don’t initially seem connected. A possibility hiding inside a problem.

She first found that instinct through storytelling. In college, as editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, she found a passion for asking questions, understanding different perspectives, and finding compelling narratives. Alongside editorial, she also explored photography, graphic design, and printmaking. Her fascination was never tied to a single medium; it was about finding the best expression for each idea.

Marketing gave that instinct a new dimension. She began to see how much more interesting the work became when storytelling and creative thinking were connected to real organizations, real audiences, and real challenges. Over time, the qualities she had once thought she needed to temper — being highly observant, making unexpected connections, and noticing details others might overlook — became some of her greatest strengths. They shaped the way she approached the work.

Eventually, Laura wanted to give that perspective more room: the ownership to stand behind her ideas, the freedom to pursue them further, and the ambition to build work with its own point of view. She created Mark & Medium to bring together the strategy, storytelling, editorial instinct, creative direction, and hands-on making she had developed throughout her career.

The medium can change, yet the vision holds firm: to create work that captures attention, builds connection, and lasts beyond the moment.

Who we work with

We work with people who see possibility in what comes next

We work with organizations across industries and disciplines, from emerging businesses to established teams. We partner with people who are curious, ambitious, and engaged in the work — people who care about getting to the right answer, not just the quickest one.

We like variety and new challenges. Some briefs arrive fully formed; others take shape as the work develops. What matters is having the space for a real exchange: to question, refine, explore, and push the work further when there’s something worth pursuing.
